Vivas laments tough decision to quit Juniors

May 24, 2009

Claudio Vivas admitted it was difficult to walk away from his post as head coach of Argentinos Juniors, but felt he had no other choice following a poor run of form.

Vivas handed in his resignation following yesterday's 3-2 defeat to Estudiantes, a result which left Argentinos at the foot of the Clausura.

It was the club's sixth successive loss in the league, and Vivas revealed he had already made his mind up to leave prior to the match.

"Last week I had a meeting with the directors and I told them I would step down if we failed to win this match," he explained. "I am a man of my word, so I quit. It is over.

"I must put my pride aside. We have to prioritise the club. The decision was made a week ago and the result only defined the situation.

"I only have words of gratitude to the players and the technical staff, who have always trusted me, as have the club directors. They gave me the chance to coach for the first time in Argentina. But now it is over."

Vivas was appointed last December as a replacement for Nestor Gorosito, who moved to giants River Plate.

Fabian Desarrasqueta has been handed the Argentinos reins on an interim basis and is expected to be in charge for the clash with River Plate next Sunday.
